I've tried five portrait services. This is the only one I hung on my wall.
By Jane Armstrong
My golden retriever Cooper passed away recently. Twelve years together.
I kept looking at the same photo of him on my phone, but it never felt like enough.
I wanted something real on the wall. Something that felt like a tribute.
So I tried five different portrait services. Some were decent. Some felt like scams — you pay, you wait, you hope.
After spending over $300, I almost gave up.
Then I tried American Art Club.
Here's what I wish I knew before I paid for any portrait.
Free preview before you pay.
Most services make you pay upfront and wait days.
Two of mine came back looking like a different dog entirely.
American Art Club shows you the finished portrait before you spend anything. No account, no card. Takes seconds.
If it's not right, you just move on.
If it falls apart up close, don't buy it.
Two of my earlier orders looked fine on a small screen. Printed at full size, the detail fell apart.
Most services don't even offer a zoom on their previews.
American Art Club does — they studied American masters like Gilbert Stuart, who painted the iconic portrait of George Washington, and built those techniques into every portrait.
The brushwork and depth actually hold when you look closely.
Avoid overseas prints.
Three of my orders arrived from overseas. Thin canvas, dull colors, one smelled like chemicals.
American Art Club prints and finishes everything in the United States. Archival canvas, museum-grade inks.
When I unpacked it, I knew right away this one was different.
Don't settle for generic portraits.
This is where American Art Club really pulled ahead.
Most services give you a handful of styles and that's it. American Art Club has over ten, but what surprised me more was how much you can customize.
Head only or full body. Horizontal or vertical. Color themes to match your room. Add a name. Choose your font.
For pets who've passed, you can add memorial dates — even a subtle halo with a soft reflection across the fur.
It actually ends up feeling like yours.
Buy direct, pay less.
American Art Club was the most affordable service I tried. Portraits start at $29.
They're a small American studio selling direct — not through marketplaces like Etsy — so you're not paying those extra markups.
Over 100,000 Americans have used them. Average rating: 4.9 stars.
I'd give them 5.
Cooper's portrait is the centerpiece of my living room now.
I see him every morning.
If you've been thinking about it, American Art Club lets you upload a photo and see your portrait before you commit to anything. No account, no card. Takes less than two minutes.
I'd start there.
“A portrait isn't a photograph. It's the way you remember them.”
